Position Title: Library Director
Classification: Full Time Exempt
Reports to: Library Board of Trustees
Salary: $45,000-55,000
The Strasburg-Heisler Library operates independently as a member of the Library System of
Lancaster County and serves around 7500 residents in and around the historic borough of
Strasburg, and 3000 patrons per month, at 143 Precision Avenue, Strasburg PA. The library is a
busy, growing hub that provides printed and technological resources and services to members
of our diverse communities and to area businesses.
Are you passionate about fostering a love for reading and learning within the community? We
are looking for a dynamic Library Director to champion our mission of protecting intellectual
freedom, supporting the full mission of the library, and serving as the primary public face of our
library. This role involves professional administrative duties and overseeing daily operations to
ensure our library remains a vibrant and essential community hub.
Key Responsibilities:
● Community Engagement:Ensure that the services and materials provided by the library
meet the diverse needs of our community.
● Collection Development: Curate and develop collections that adhere to professional
standards and resonate with our patrons.
● Compliance and Excellence: Maintain compliance with the PA State Code for Libraries,
ensuring the highest standards of excellence.
● Operational Management: Oversee staff procedures, financial records, and the
preparation of the annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Trustees.
● Grant Acquisition: Seek out and secure grant funding through thorough research and
application.
● Staff Leadership: Hire, train, and evaluate a staff of 6-8 people, fostering a supportive
and efficient work environment.
● Public Relations: Cultivate positive relationships with the media and stakeholders, and
facilitate engaging workshops and programs for adults and children.
● Oversee annual fundraising goals of the library.
Collaboration with the Board of Trustees:
● Governance and Legal Matters: Keep the Board informed of legal matters and
governance updates.
● Board Development: Recommend agenda items, report on library progress, and inform
the Board of relevant trends and legislative activities.
● Policy Development: Draft and update library policies in response to changing needs.
Library Development:
● Professional Growth: Stay informed on library field developments through memberships
in professional organizations like the American Library Association (ALA) and PALA.
● Community Involvement: Actively participate in the Directors Council of the Public
Libraries in Lancaster County and contribute to committees that benefit the greater good.
● System Compliance: Adhere to the Membership Agreement of the Library System of
Lancaster County.
● Provide leadership and collaborate effectively with library volunteers, Friends of the
library, community service workers, and community groups.
Minimum Qualifications and Compensation:
● Education: Bachelor’s or advanced degree and education in Library Sciences as per
Pennsylvania State Code requirements, and for the size of the population of the library’s
designated service area.
● Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, advanced proficiency in Microsoft
Office Suite and QuickBooks Online, and demonstrated ability to manage, lead, and
inspire a team.
● Position: Full-time Exempt, with compensation aligned with the American Library
Association’s recommendations for library staff salaries, and three weeks of annual
leave provided.
