The Strasburg-Heisler Library is partnering with L-S Together in collecting new underwear for school-age kids throughout the month of January. Our goal is to gather 500 pairs of new underwear which will be distributed to local organizations that serve children and families in the Lampeter-Strasburg community, and to the school nurses so they have them available to students who need them.
Children may need clean underwear at school for a variety of reasons: accidents, illness, items are not available at home, inability for the family to wash clothes regularly, children who dress themselves inappropriately, or a parent is just not available to bring fresh clothing to the school mid-day.
The availability of this simple piece of clothing provides students relief from embarrassment and keeps them in the classroom so they can focus on learning.
The Drop Your Drawers campaign began in Campbell County Public Library in KY when the librarian had a conversation with a school nurse and was shocked to learn of the number of pairs of underwear that they were giving to students. By mid-year their supply typically runs out and the nurses were buying underwear themselves to give to the students. 2019 was the fifth year of CCPL Drop Your Drawers campaign when they collected over 10,000 pairs of underwear in the library!
This is the first Drop Your Drawers campaign in Lancaster County. If you’d like to help, a variety of sizes is needed for boys and girls in grades K thru 12. Simply drop your donation of new, packaged underwear at the collection point in the Library which is easily recognizable by the Captain Underpants character created by Dav Pilkey.
The library’s collection of Captain Underpants’ children’s books will be on display and available to check out during the Drop Your Drawers campaign. Don’t make your library visit brief! Stay and enjoy the library’s many services.
